All-time favorite Romantic reads

Weekend might still be away but you can enjoy that mushy, laid back feeling. Sit back and enjoy these all-time favorite romantic reads:

Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte: Wuthering Heights is a wild, passionate story of the intense and almost demonic love between Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff, a foundling adopted by Catherine’s father.

The action of the story is chaotic and unremittingly violent, but the accomplished handling of a complex structure, the evocative descriptions of the lonely moorland setting and the poetic grandeur of vision combine to make this unique novel a masterpiece of English literature.

Love Story by Eric Segal: Opposites in nearly every way, Oliver and Jenny are kindred spirits from vastly different worlds. Falling deeply and powerfully, their attraction to one another defies everything they have ever believed–as they share a passion far greater than anything they dreamed possible . . . and explore the wonder of a love that must end too soon.

One of the most adored novels of our time, this is the book that defined a generation–a story of uncompromising devotion, of life as it really is . . . and love that changes everything.

P. S. I Love You by Cecelia Ahern: Holly couldn’t live without her husband Gerry, until the day she had to. They were the kind of young couple who could finish each other’s sentences. When Gerry succumbs to a terminal illness and dies, 30-year-old Holly is set adrift, unable to pick up the pieces. But with the help of a series of letters her husband left her before he died and a little nudging from an eccentric assortment of family and friends, she learns to laugh, overcome her fears, and discover a world she never knew existed.

The kind of enchanting novel with cross-generational appeal that comes along once in a great while, PS, I Love You is a captivating love letter to the world!

Three self-motivation books you must read

Every person we know of, wants one thing for sure- success in all his endeavours. We find motivation from successful persons in our respective fields, from our families and friends and from our inner calling. But sometimes, we need an extra push to keep us toiling through our way to success. Books, Activities and Games Library and Store (BAGS) enlists three books on self motivation that everyone must read:

1. “Think & Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill– Napoleon Hill spent two decades analyzing over 500 successful men like Henry Ford, Thomas Edison and John D. Rockefeller to discover how they did it. The result of Hill’s research is in Think & Grow Rich – 13 steps to achieve your goal, whatever it is.

2. “Psychocybernetics” by Maxwell Maltz– Another bestseller and the only self-help book you’ll need next to “Think & Grow Rich”. Maxwell Maltz was a plastic surgeon who was amazed that some patients still felt ugly after surgery. That’s when he discovered they also needed reconstruction work inside, their “self-image”. Everything about how to use the “mind-body” connection to achieve your goals, and how to feel confident about your body is inside this book.

3. “Talent is Overrated” by Geoff Colvin– This book drives the point home that success in any field is not determined by genetics or talent but deliberate practice. Colvin uses examples from world class achievers like Tiger Woods, Jack Welch, Warren Buffet, Mozart to prove that they all got their through years of practice – the 10,000 hours rule. You’ll re-examine your beliefs about what it takes to succeed and supercharge your motivation after reading Colvin’s book.

Harry Potter Series: How it cultivated reading habits in kids and adolescents?

Habit of reading

Creating a habit of reading is a continuous battle with kids who are saturated with other options. Anyone with children or grandchildren will comply with us as they see the fierce competition that pleasure reading faces with a million other things in a kid’s life.

Young people are less inclined to read (other than course books) as they move into their teenage years for a variety of reasons. Some of these are trends of long-standing (being more socially active, reading-for-school, and other sources of entertainment) and some are more recent (attention demanding gizmos, from i-pods to Wi-Fi consoles).

But then, Harry Potter series came along to change it all. The books have been a publishing sensation for a decade, tempting children and grown-ups alike to put down their gadgets and curl up with a book instead. Before Harry Potter, it was unusual of kids to line up for a mere book. Even the few, who read short stories, were suddenly plowing through more pages and larger volumes in a matter of days.

Harry Potter Series

Of all the magical powers wielded by Harry Potter, perhaps none has cast a stronger spell than his supposed ability to transform the reading habits of young people. In what has become near mythology about the wildly popular series by J.K. Rowling, many parents, teachers, librarians and booksellers have credited it with inspiring a generation of kids to read for pleasure in a world dominated by instant messaging and music downloads.

J. K. Rowling

In a way that was previously rare for books, Harry Potter entered the pop-culture consciousness. The movies heightened the fervor, spawning video games and collectible figurines. That made it easier for kids who thought reading was for geeks to pick up a book.

There is something about the passion that a novel can inspire exciting those who want to perpetuate a culture of reading. Even as the Harry Potter series has come to an end, other books have taken its place in reading lists of people.

A good indication, we would say!

Inculcating the habit of reading in children:B.A.G.S

“Today a reader, tomorrow a leader!”

This adage underscores the importance of reading in any individual’s life. Quite obviously, the foremost advantage that reading provides is that it engages the mind, and exercises it much more than any other form of entertainment.

Reading, as a habit, involves a considerable amount of effort and participation from the reader himself/herself. It is not a passive form of entertainment, unlike other mediums, like the television, or video games. With a book you have to absorb what you read, and have to have a command over the language.

As parents, it becomes your role to further this emphasis in a child’s life, and encourage your child to read as much as he can, and learn to appreciate and enjoy the habit.

While reading does not make children more intelligent, what it can do is increase their imagination; helps broaden their outlook towards life and help them to be more open minded.

Reading of any kind can add to a child’s knowledge irrespective of the kind of book your child is reading. Yes, even a comic book! It can also help the child become a good judge of character over time. It gives a child greater depth in knowledge.

Make the habit seem like a hobby, something that a child will enjoy, and not as a task, which will make him/her want to run away from it.

Kids love to see something colourful and exciting. So, why not make library/book store visits a family affair.

B.A.G.S, A Family library & Book store have dedicated a special corner with a special bookcase, table and chairs for kids to sit and read their favaourite books.

Parents too can have fun with  children and their books!

It is a life long habit, that your child is likely to enjoy forever!

To raise a reader, you don’t need to overstress, or over work.

Come along with your kid and we will do the rest to raise a happy reader:)
